Breaking down Obama’s State of the Union Speech : The play by play‏

9:11 – The speechifying begings! Even a year in, I still can’t get used to an eloquent President.

9;14 – Economy, economy, economy!

9:15 – America wants bi-partisanship? Maybe the Americans who don’t vote do, the rest watch FOX news and spit their Skoal into an empty beer bottle.

9:18 – “bank bail out was as enjoyable as a root canal” hmmm… Why still backing Bernanke and Geithner then?

9:23 – Apparently the economy is growing again – who knew?

9:24 – Passed the new jobs bill in the house – pass it in the Senate? Fat chance. Not with the party of NO and their new Massachusetts seat.

9;25  – John Boehner and Eric Cantor smirk like two pig eyed sacks of excressence as Obama proclaims we should use the 30 billion Wall street repaid to credit small business.

9:27 – Remove the capital gains tax and build INFRASTUCTURE – who knew we were building a bullet train in…TAMPA?

9:32 – “I do not accept 2nd place for the USA!!!” – Hey, we’d be LUCKY to get 2nd place, at this point Lithuania is beating our ass.

9:35 – Oil and nuclear power is mentioned…ahhh… a President that can pronounce the word nuclear.

9;43 – First mention of Health Care! Obama jokes that it’s clear he hasn’t pursued it because it was good politics. Republicans sit on their hands and glower and grumble.

9:48 – Obama to congress… “Don’t walk away from reform… let’s get it done”. Will the Repubs listen, or make the gamble that obstructionism will get them back the House?

9:51 - Publically announces that dumb Government spending freeze, didn’t go over too well with Dems. Apparently he agrees it’s a bad idea, that’s why he’s waiting ’til next year when “the economy recovers” to implement it. Huh?

9:57 – First mention of the Supreme Court decision allowing coroporations to buy and sell elections as the Supreme Court justices look on uncomfortably. Obamapleads with congress to pass legislation to “correct the problem”.  …Yeah, again with the party of NO and their filibuster – fat chance of that happening.

9:58 – Shaming the Repubs some more, exclaiming every day can’t be election day, can’t tell if this is coming off as Mr. cool saavy or too Mr. happy pants, peace maker, bi-partisan.

10:02 – Best lines of the night – to Dems after Massachusetts loss - “Don’t run for the hills” to Repubs “Just say no may be good politics, but it’s not leadership!” In other words, I dare you to continue with your obstructionist BS… Mitch McConnell smirks on.

10:05 – Afghanistan! Apparently we’re still there,

10:06 – All our troops will be out of Iraq by the end of August. famous last words.

10:09 – Following in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan to reduce nuclear weapons…hey… wait a minute… RONALD REAGAN reduced nuclear weapons!!? EH.. at least he pronounced it correctly.

10:10 – Iran, you thought I forgot you huh? Watch your ass ok you’ve been warned.. on to other stuff.

10:16 – American values are neither Republican nor Democratic… Well I know MY  American values aren’t Republican.

10:17 – Hey America, I know I promised change, but I never promised you a rose garden! ”My administration has had set-backs, some of them deserved, but nothing compared to what the families of America have had this past year” Damn straight!

10:19 – Did he just chant USA, USA, USA? Yes he did!

10:20 – The spirit lives on in America! We don’t quit… I DON’T QUIT! Ok.. Mr. President, now get Congress to PASS REAL HEALTH CARE!

My final thoughts…Well Joe Wilson didn’t cry out “You Lie!” this time, so that’s always super. Republicans seemed to be slightly less tight-assed, actually getting up and applauding at the end, which makes me wonder if it’s just wishful thinking on my part or perhaps it’s a sign that the party of NO might turn into the party of maybe? Obama did a pretty good job of shaming the opposition, by daring them to say NO to Health Care and slapping down Wall Street with MAIN street angrily watching on. I still thought there wasn’t enough red meat for the base, but all in all a clever effort for Obama.

Yeah, I just don’t know if he was too subtle… Republicans don’t respond to subtle.
