Z LIST: The top 20 FUNNIEST SCENES of all time

20 . “Marching up and down the square” from Monty Python’s the Meaning of life
Michael Palin at his silliest. Never fails to crack me up.

19. “The hardest sobriety test known to man” – The Man with Two Brains
Steve Martin at his funniest, seamlessly incorporating his genius for slapstick and vaudeville.

18. “Roast beef sandwich” – Diner
Hilarious because of its realism. I’ve had millions of conversations like this in diners growing up.

17. “When the going get tough” – National Lampoon’s Animal House
Classic scene. Belushi at his best.

16. “General Turgeson’s Five point Plan on surviving a Nuclear War” – Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
One of the funniest scenes on the subject of war ever put down. Totally relevant still. Everyone just mentions Peter Sellers when talking about this film (and he WAS genius in it) but to me it was the great George C. Scott who stole the movie

15. “Lighten up Francis” – Stripes
Speaking of the military… One of the most quotable scenes in the classic ‘Stripes’. It’s got 3 huge lines in it… “Chicks dig me cause I rarely wear underwear”, “Lighten up Francis” and the “Lean, mean, fighting machine” line.

14. “Hollywood agent” – The Big Picture
Martin Short being brilliant. Totally nails the disingenuousness of Hollywood.

13. “Orgasm” – Bananas
The scene speaks for itself… Of course since the whole marrying his daughter thing, the final line kind of takes away from the humor slightly..

12. “The Carpenters” – Tommy Boy
Who DOESN’T love the Carpenters?

11. “The Chinaman is not the issue” – The Big Lebowski
Donnie you’re out of your element… classic.

10. “Cabin scene” – Night at the Opera
Brilliantly constructed scene by the great Marx Brothers. Inventive, unique and genius.

9. “Do NOT open this door!!” – Young Frankenstein
Gene Wilder. ‘Nuff said. Can’t watch this without laughing.

8. “These go to 11″ – Spinal Tap
Classic.

7. “Collection of clips” – Anchorman
Too many bits to single out in this modern comic masterpiece. So here’s a best of.

6. “Sex Education” – The Meaning of Life
John Cleese as the British Boarding Schoolmaster giving a lesson on sex = Pure hilarity

5. “Quest for fun” – Vacation
National Lampoon’s Vacation is one of the top 5 funniest movies of all time…this classic final break down of Clark Griswald always gets to me, “I think you’re all fucked in the HEAD!”. Greatest line ever.

4. “I speak jive” – Airplane
This scene could not be made today… Doesn’t make it any less funny.

3. “The Inquisition” – History of the World Part 1
Intricate, elaborate and pure Mel Brooks. Could only come from the man who brought us Springtime for Hitler

2. “Stuck in a line” – Annie Hall
“Gee if life were only like this”. Indeed.

1. “FMA!” – The Odd Couple
The scene speaks for itself.

2 Comments for “Z LIST: The top 20 FUNNIEST SCENES of all time”

  1. Thanks for the ranking! We keep on trying, like when those Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

  2. BillyVanDahm

How is the jerk nowhere on the list? Honorable mention? Also no Blazing Saddles. Were they just too great as a whole to choose one scene?
