Obama uses Natoma Canfield story to sway public opinion on health care reform
President Obama has been using the ‘Natoma Canfield’ story to great effect in order to sway the hold outs on health care. Canfield is a 50-year-old cancer survivor from nearby Medina who had written the White House in late December about her inability to afford insurance, as her premiums were set to rise 40 percent in 2010 after a 25 percent increase in 2009.
This Monday, Obama addressed a crowd in Strongsville, Ohio, urging Congress to pass health care. He was to have had Canfield introduce him to the stage, but a few days before she had collapsed, was taking to the hospital and soon discovered she had leukemia. Obama relayed this to the crowd in a bid to appeal to their humanity, “The reason Natoma is not here today is that she’s lying in a hospital bed, suddenly faced with this emergency – suddenly thrust into a fight for her life. She expects to face a month or more of aggressive chemotherapy. And she is racked with worry not only about her illness but about the cost of the tests and treatments she will surely need to beat it – I’m here because of Natoma.”
It’s a bit ‘let’s win one for the Gipper’, but effective nonetheless.
I’ve been saying it’s about 50/50 on whether or not it gets passed this week…I think I’m switching that prediction to 60/40 in favor of passage.

Nice to see Obama doing what he needs to do to get shit done…even if the manipulation factor is set to “Remember Me”-level.
She is a housekeeper. I want to know if she pays income tax on her earnings. Bet ya a cookie she hasn’t.
Also, if she couldn’t afford to keep her policy when it was $500/month, how is Obama’s discounted group policy going to help her? She still wouldn’t have been able to afford it, she still would have dropped the coverage and she still would have needed the operation on the taxpayer’s dime.
Look, I don’t like paying for my health insurance either. No one does. But it’s important to so I and millions of other Americans pay our premiums monthly. Would I like to keep the monthly premium and instead buy a large screen tv? Or go on a cruise? Heck yeah, but that would be a bad move. Hard to feel sorry for someone who knows she is at risk, drops her coverage and then…boo hoo…can’t afford the operation. I agree that coverage can be expensive, but heh, here’s a new concept for those who need more money…get a second job! (Here ya go – try this: http://www.Professions.Com )
C’mon! Why are we wasting our time on this? Don’t we have two wars to fight with Iran building a nuclear bomb?
Stop living in fear of the bogeyman!
John Paul, get cancer already you miserable fuck.
What you fail to report is Ms. Canfield DID have insurance, and she dropped it. And, since she is in the hospital now, who is paying for it? She has a very nice room, for the next 28 days, and TV! So where’s the money coming from, Hmmmmm?
Gotta love those compassionate republicans! Just warms your heart don’t it?
She is getting the care. She won’t ever have to pay for it. The rest of us will. So what exactly do we need the Feds to get involved for? In case you haven’t figured it out, they need the money. They need to be able to draw in the 2 trillion a year that goes through the medical/insurance system, so that then can stay afloat. If you really think that BHO or any Federal politician really cares about the personal health of Ms. Canfield, ask them how much of her bill they are willing to pay with their money?
Walrus….just the reply that I would expect from a liberal when confronted with facts and the truth.
If there are supposedly so many people dying because of the evil health insureres, why can’t Obama highlight a story that’s not only a true representation of the problem, but actually true?
Remeber the man Obama claimed died because his health care insurance dropped him? The claim was untrue; the treatment he recieved extended his life by 3 whole years! How about the single mother of three that worked at Jack in the Box that tragically died. Then the unions and George Soros brought out the son to plea for Obamacare. She has become the case model for the government assistance we already have, and yet somehow this is an example of why we need MORE government care?
Why is it that the government is always the answer: for jobs; for health care; for education; for food?
Obama would have you derive your hope from having faith in the government to be charitable and provide everything to everyone. NO GOVERNMENT PROGRAM in existence can provide faith, hope and charity.
