My assignment was to review the new full-album cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ by The Flaming Lips and protégés Stardeath & White Dwarfs. I suppose I’ve been asked to do so for one of many reasons – I’ve done time in a Floyd cover band; I’m a huge fan of the band, particularly their material from 1968-1972; and, debatably, I’m the Zeitgeisty Report’s resident Pink Floyd Expert© – for what that’s worth.

Rock, motherf*cker/Rock, motherf*cker/Rock, motherf*cker/Yeah (as gruffly intoned by Mr. Zombie on the single “Sick Bubblegum”), is the kind of chorus that could be somewhat subversive and at least momentarily exciting coming from Britney or Miley, but from Zombie at this juncture, it just sounds rather obligatory and tired.

Elvis Costello is one of rock history’s greatest chameleons, changing hats effortlessly through his prodigious career. Punk, soul singer, crooner, country and western yokeler, lounge lizard, jazzman, conductor of a string quartet, even TALK SHOW HOST… this remarkable man has done it all.

In the early 60s, they called Bob Dylan the “voice of his generation”. But, he disavowed himself of the moniker and all the baggage that came along with it, seeing right through the hackneyed expression with eyes miles wiser than the scruffy, young, ragamuffin poet the mainstream media and liberal elite took him for. An image, they themselves had created.
Years later, the same old characters tried to pin that donkey’s tail on Kurt Cobain… with the same results. Only in this instance, he was so sickened by it all he blew a hole in his head.
